Example
A German customer pays an online shop with Wero. The payment is approved in a banking app and moves from the customer's bank account to the merchant's.
Europe has spent years building a way to pay that does not run on a card network. Wero is the attempt.
What it is
Wero is a product of EPI Company SE. Its site describes a bank-linked service to send money, receive money and pay directly from a bank account, in 10 seconds or less, 24/7. It is a wallet linked to bank accounts, not a card scheme product, and it is based on instant payments (see SEPA Instant).
Where it is live
As of October 2026, from Wero's own site and EPI's releases:
- Wero's site lists Belgium, France, Germany and Luxembourg as available, and says it plans to add the Netherlands in 2026. EPI says Wero has been live for person-to-person payments in Belgium, France and Germany since 2024.
- For online shops, it went live in Germany in late 2025 through the Sparkassen and Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken, with more banks following in 2026. In France, one banking group made the first Wero e-commerce payments on 20 April 2026, with access widening over the summer.
- In the Netherlands, Wero is the destination for the iDEAL migration, which the participants aim to complete by 31 December 2027.
- Wero's site says in-store payments are to be added; they are not described as live.
What it means for a merchant
A Wero online payment is a card-not-present situation in the everyday sense: the customer is not at the till. Availability differs by country and by the customer's bank. Check with your payment provider which banks' customers can pay you today, and do not treat the coverage list as final. EPI's pages move faster than a glossary does.
A wallet is only as useful as the banks behind it. Count the banks.
